Origin and grooming of Jack Russell Terrier

The name for Jack Russell Terrier breed originated from John Russell, who bred this particular dog breed to work in his farm in England in 19th century. The primary purpose of this breed then was fox hunting. The breed was groomed for that purpose. So this was a working breed then and it still retains characteristics of the same.

The Jack Russell Terrier of today has withstand the various changes that occurred in these long years as it has been preserved by the enthusiasts of the working terrier in England for more than 100 years; it survived all the changes on its merits as a worker and they have done everything with the quality of fox hunting in mind and coloring, character, and intelligence. They have a great physique and body dimensions. The body is well built and it makes it a well suitable for a hunting dog. The Jack Russell Terrier should also be kept totally flexible for allowing maneuverability underground. The owner must be responsible to keep these traits active in Russell Terrier. Jack Russell Terrier’s structure and abilities allows him to follow his quarry deep down the earth. Jack Russell Terrain considers Fox as his role model as they follow the fox wherever it goes. Even though The Jack Russell was originally bred for fox hunting, it is a versatile working terrier adaptable to a variety of quarry including fox, raccoon among other animals. The breed quality of the Jack Russell is to have the courage to follow its prey wherever it goes even to ground and stay with it until the prey bolts, is dug to, or receive a command to come out; they are intended to bark at their prey, not to kill. It is known that a Jack Russell to stay in an active earth for many days without even basic necessities such as food and water because of the strong instinct in them to keep an eye on the prey.

The Terriers should be fed with plenty of high quality dog food. One must not even consider saving money by feeding a cheap and low protein and high fat dog food, as it may give adverse effects in the breed. Always feed your terrier in morning before you take him for hunting and take at least half the quantity of ration that you give him at mid day which could be given to him while he has been working all morning. The Terriers sent for work without breakfast could result in dangerous consequences. Like sugar level coming down and he potentially approaches hypoglycemia. Always check the fitness of your terrier before taking him in the field. A weak and thin terrier is definitely not a fit terrier. The fitness is all to do with muscle tone and staying power and the terrier cannot be said to have strong muscle and staying power if he is weak and thin. If you are going to take your terrier in the ice and snow, check periodically for cuts and abrasions and signs of frost bite in the pads of his feet and in between his toes. Jack Russell Terrier cannot be expected to brave extreme whether if he is a house dog full-time .One should always make sure that he has optimum time to exercise. If you want to retain Jack Russell Terrier as hunter dog, then rigorous exercise must be given each day to keep it fit and healthy. We should always keep the terrier current on all of his vaccinations. Always do not hesitate spend few extra dollars on annual rabies and lime vaccinations as it may save your terriers life.
