Russell Terriers form a really good companion breed. But their first nature is of a working breed rather than a companion breed. This is because of their origins. They were and they still are groomed by some dedicated farmers to protect their farm from unwanted guests and also from farm destroyers such as fox and rats. Their boundless energy makes them suitable to participate in a variety of events. They have hunting capabilities and instincts.

A Jack Russell can equally be imagined both as a hunting dog and also as a lovely companion to children, playing with them. Their boundless energy helps them in both.They are by breed, hunting dogs. One must always keep that in mind. But the great quality about them is that they are adept to various environments according to needs.

Russell Terriers are hyper active kind of dogs suitable for both their roles. So if you just want a dog to roam around you and play with you, then don’t get Jack Russell, as they do not fit into the role. When bored, they will create new and fun jobs for themselves, which may not be positive and at times it may even hurt others.

Jack Russell Terriers are excellent guard dogs. They are very protective dogs and they like to protect their territory. Russell Terriers have unlimited energy and require a lot of exercise. We must exercise them daily to keep them active and to control their hyper energy. We must take them long walks regardless of whether and climate constraints.

Jack Russell Terriers have hunting instincts in them and one cannot expect them to be idle. When left idle, they would then vent their energy by using their natural instincts such as hunting. They are aggressive and assertive type of dogs. They are fearless kind and they often think that they are bigger than what they actually are. They even challenge and fight with bigger dogs.

Russell Terrier dogs are lively by nature. They are not lazy and they don’t just sit around. They are very shrewd .They are always seen with an intelligent expression. Naturally they are confident with all these traits. They often think that they are unformidable creatures. They often try to teach the owner. The owner must be careful that he must be the dominant character always, even in games. If given an opportunity, Russell Terrier may take the dominant role. Proper training must be given so that they are obedient and disciplined.

They are shrewd creatures and so if trained properly they can learn anything that is being taught. We must train them to socialize with other animals and dogs, so that they do not hurt them in the future. They require attention and care and they require them in such extraordinary amounts. Russell Terriers are thereby high maintenance dogs. Russell Terrier dogs are known to get into situations where they stay underground for weeks to catch a prey. It could be a frightening experience for the untrained owners who don’t know the tricks to handle the ways of Russell terrier. Owners should be thorough in their knowledge of earthwork and the behavior of terrier otherwise the results could be tragic.

Russell Terriers hurt other animals, birds and dogs. They even hurt other dogs of the same breed. No two Russell Terriers must be left together unsupervised. If it is really necessary, then proper facilities and supervision must be provided. Unlike many other dogs, Russell Terrier always thinks about stuffs and also about future, which make them special.
